Natural Candle Buying & Care Guide NZ

Everything you need to know about choosing, burning, and caring for natural lavender candles — from a small-batch farm in Waikato, New Zealand.

This guide was written by the team at Lavender Backyard Garden® — a small-batch lavender farm in Waikato, New Zealand, growing and crafting since 2014.

Our candles are hand-poured using soy wax and essential oil distilled on-site from Lavandula × intermedia 'Super', grown in our own spray-free fields. We hand-pour in small batches to ensure consistent scent quality and clean combustion in every candle.

Everything in this guide comes from what we have learned through years of growing, distilling, and crafting with lavender — not from generic candle industry sources.

Choosing the Right Candle

Finding the right candle starts with understanding what it's made from. The wax type, scent source, and pour method all affect how a candle burns, how long it lasts, and what it releases into your air. In this section, we cover:

  • How to choose between soy, beeswax, and blended waxes
  • The difference between essential oil and fragrance oil candles
  • Candle sizes and burn times for different spaces
  • Matching scents to moods and occasions

Our Waikato-poured soy candles use essential oil from Lavandula × intermedia 'Super' — the same lavender distilled on our farm — giving a scent that is truer to the flower than synthetic fragrance alternatives. Rich in naturally occurring linalool — the compound studied for its ability to support calm and reduce cortisol — our lavender candles deliver aromatherapy benefit with every burn, not just fragrance.

Candle Burning Tips & Safety

Burning your candle correctly makes a real difference to scent throw, burn life, and safety. This guide covers exactly how:

  • Avoid tunneling and extend burn time
  • Trim your wick for a cleaner flame
  • Safely enjoy candles around kids and pets
  • Reuse your candle jar after the last burn

Our soy candles have a wider melt pool than narrow-pour paraffin alternatives — always allow the full surface to liquefy on the first burn to set the wax memory and prevent tunnelling. In Waikato's humid summer months — December through February — allow an extra 5 minutes on the first burn as the wider ambient temperature affects how quickly the melt pool forms across the full surface.

Natural Candle Wax Types — How Each One Burns

Wax Type How It Burns Scent Source Best For LBG Candle
Soy wax Clean, slow burn — lower heat, less soot than paraffin. Wide melt pool on first burn sets wax memory. Pure essential oil or fragrance oil Bedrooms, relaxation, everyday home fragrance Lavender Votive Soy Candle — scented with Lavandula × intermedia 'Super' from our Waikato farm

Soy + coconut blend Combines clean burn of soy with the scent throw and longevity of coconut. Balanced melt pool. Pure essential oil Home offices, focus work, study spaces Focus Candle — lavender and rosemary essential oil, Waikato NZ
Paraffin Shorter burn, higher soot output. Releases petrochemical byproducts during combustion. Synthetic fragrance oil Not recommended for home use Not used in any LBG candle — all our candles are paraffin-free

Natural Candle Questions Answered

What is a natural candle?

A natural candle is made from plant-based wax — such as soy wax or coconut wax — rather than paraffin, which is a petroleum byproduct. Natural candles burn more slowly and cleanly than paraffin, and when scented with pure essential oil rather than synthetic fragrance, they release no artificial chemicals into the air. At Lavender Backyard Garden®, our candles are hand-poured in Waikato, New Zealand, using essential oil distilled on-site from our spray-free lavender fields.

What is the difference between essential oil candles and fragrance oil candles?

Essential oil candles are scented with pure plant extracts — in our case, lavender essential oil steam-distilled directly on our Waikato farm. Fragrance oil candles use synthetic compounds that mimic natural scents but may contain phthalates or other artificial chemicals. For those who prefer natural home fragrance without synthetic additives, essential oil candles are the cleaner option.

How do I stop my candle from tunnelling?

Tunnelling happens when a candle burns down the centre without melting the wax to the edges. To prevent it, allow your candle to burn long enough on the first use for the entire surface to liquefy — this sets the wax memory. For a standard-sized candle this typically takes one to two hours. Always trim the wick to approximately 5mm before relighting.

How long should I burn a candle for?

A general guide is no more than three to four hours per burn session to protect the wax pool from overheating. Extinguish the flame and allow the candle to cool completely before relighting. For the first burn, always allow the full surface to melt to the edges before extinguishing — this prevents tunnelling on all future burns.

Are soy candles safe to use around pets and children in New Zealand?

Soy candles scented with pure essential oil produce less soot and no petroleum byproducts compared to paraffin candles. However, some essential oils can be irritating to cats and dogs in high concentrations. Always burn candles in well-ventilated rooms, keep them out of reach of children and animals, and never leave a burning candle unattended. Consult your vet if you have specific concerns about your pets.

What do I do when the candle has burned down — can I reuse the jar?

Once your candle has burned to the last 5–10mm of wax, extinguish it and allow the jar to cool. Remove remaining wax by placing the jar in the freezer for an hour — the wax contracts and lifts out easily. Clean the jar with warm soapy water. Our candle jars are designed to be reused as drinking glasses, plant pots, or storage vessels.

How do I choose the right candle scent for different rooms in my home?

Lighter, fresher scents such as lavender with rosemary or eucalyptus work well in home offices and spaces where mental clarity is valued. Warmer, softer lavender scents are ideal for bedrooms and living areas. Avoid very strong scents in small enclosed spaces. Our Focus Candle with lavender and rosemary is designed for work and focus spaces; our Votive Soy Candle is suited to relaxation and winding down.
