Natural Skin Care Guide NZ

Every ingredient grown and made on our Waikato farm — natural lavender skincare from field to your bathroom shelf.

Lavender Backyard Garden® has been growing Lavandula × intermedia 'Super' and Lavandula angustifolia 'Pacific Blue' and steam-distilling essential oil on our Newstead farm in Waikato, New Zealand since 2014. Our natural skincare range is formulated by Tracey, a certified personal care and cosmetic specialist, using botanicals from our own late-January and February harvest. Everything is made on-site in small batches — from field to finished product, no imported oil, no synthetic fragrance. We are not medical professionals. This guide shares what we grow, make, and observe from our own farm experience.

Natural Moisturisers for NZ and Australian Skin

New Zealand and Australian skin faces specific challenges that generic moisturisers are not formulated for — UV intensity, wind exposure, seasonal dryness from summer air conditioning, and the low-humidity winters of the South Island and inland regions. The skin responds to these conditions with tightness, flaking, and a loss of the moisture barrier that holds hydration in.

At Lavender Backyard Garden®, our moisturising range covers every step — from lightweight daily body lotions and fast-absorbing body oils, to concentrated hand creams for dry, hardworking hands, and richer face moisturisers for overnight repair. Every product is made on our Waikato farm using farm-distilled lavender essential oil blended with carrier bases including argan oil, coconut oil, and shea butter — chosen for their fatty acid profile and how they feel on NZ and Australian skin.

Our manuka honey moisturisers add a NZ-native humectant to the formula — manuka honey draws and holds moisture in the skin's surface layer without synthetic emulsifiers or petrochemical thickeners.

Natural Face Care: Toners, Serums and Masks

A natural face care routine does not need to be complicated. The most effective simple routine — cleanse, tone, moisturise — works because each step prepares the skin for the next. A toner removes residue and balances the skin's pH after cleansing. A serum delivers concentrated actives to where the skin needs them. A moisturiser seals everything in.

Lavender hydrosol — the water collected during the steam distillation of lavender — is one of the most underused natural toners available. At Lavender Backyard Garden®, our hydrosol face toner is a genuine by-product of our on-farm distillation process: pure lavender water from Lavandula × intermedia 'Super', with no synthetic additives. Linalool and linalyl acetate — the primary active compounds in steam-distilled lavender — are present in the hydrosol and support the skin's surface without stripping it.

For skin that needs deeper hydration, our hyaluronic acid face mask combines aloe vera and lavender in a formula suitable for dry, dull, or sun-stressed skin. The aloe vera provides immediate soothing. The hyaluronic acid draws and holds moisture at the surface layer.

Lavender hydrosol is the pure water fraction of the steam distillation process — a genuine farm by-product that tones skin without alcohol, without synthetic fragrance, and without the petrochemical residue found in most commercial toners.

Natural Body Oils and a Simple Skin Routine for NZ and Australian Skin

Body oil is the most underestimated step in a natural skincare routine. Applied to damp skin immediately after a shower, a body oil seals in the moisture that the water has temporarily introduced to the skin's surface. This is different from applying oil to dry skin, where the oil sits on top rather than locking hydration in.

At Lavender Backyard Garden®, our body oils are made with carrier oils — chosen for their fatty acid profile and their skin-feel — and blended with our farm-distilled lavender essential oil. The lavender provides scent from a traceable, natural source and contributes linalool to the formula, a compound studied for its skin-supporting and calming properties.

A practical natural skin routine for NZ and Australian conditions:
— Morning: cleanser → lavender hydrosol toner → manuka honey lotion (SPF layered over the top separately)
— Evening: cleanser → toner → manuka honey night cream or hyaluronic acid mask (2–3x per week)
— Post-shower: body oil on damp skin → body lotion if extra dryness present
— Weekly: lavender aloe vera face scrub to remove dead skin cells gently

Applying body oil to damp skin within 60 seconds of stepping out of the shower is the single most effective way to prevent transepidermal water loss — and it works with any natural oil, not just expensive formulations.

In Waikato summers, where UV index routinely exceeds 11 and the wind draws moisture from exposed skin faster than most people expect, a lightweight lavender body oil applied after swimming or outdoor activity is one of the most practical natural skincare habits we know.

Natural Skincare Questions Answered

What is natural skincare?

Natural skincare is the practice of using products formulated from plant-based and mineral ingredients — without synthetic fragrance, petrochemicals, or artificial preservatives. At Lavender Backyard Garden®, natural skincare means products made from ingredients we grow and distill ourselves on our Waikato farm — lavender essential oil and lavender hydrosol — combined with high-quality botanicals like NZ manuka honey and aloe vera. What makes a product genuinely natural is ingredient transparency and traceable sourcing — not just a label claim.

What is the difference between a moisturiser, a lotion, and a body oil?

A moisturiser is formulated for the face or body and typically combines water, emollients, and occlusives to hydrate and protect the skin barrier. A lotion is a lighter version of a moisturiser — more water, less oil — suited to normal to slightly dry skin or warm climates. A body oil contains no water and works by sealing moisture into the skin; it is most effective when applied to damp skin immediately after showering, before the skin's surface has dried. All three serve the same goal — maintaining the skin's moisture barrier — but they suit different skin types and application moments.

Is lavender good for skin?

Lavender essential oil contains linalool and linalyl acetate — naturally occurring terpenes studied for their skin-supporting properties. Research on linalool suggests it helps maintain the skin's surface comfort and may support the skin barrier when used in appropriate concentrations in a carrier formula. At Lavender Backyard Garden®, we use steam-distilled lavender oil from our own Lavandula × intermedia 'Super' crop — a high-linalool variety — in all our skincare products. This is not imported or synthetic fragrance; it is traceable, farm-distilled oil at every step.

What natural moisturiser is best for dry skin in New Zealand?

For dry facial skin, a cream-based moisturiser with humectant and emollient ingredients works best — manuka honey (a NZ-native humectant), shea butter, and lavender-infused oils are a practical combination. For dry body skin in NZ conditions — particularly winter in Waikato, Otago, and Canterbury, where cold and wind accelerate moisture loss — a body oil on damp skin followed by a lotion is the most effective two-step approach. Our Lavender Manuka Honey Night Cream and Body Lotion are both formulated for NZ skin conditions, made on our Waikato farm.

What is lavender hydrosol and can I use it as a toner?

Lavender hydrosol is the pure water collected during the steam distillation of lavender flowers. It contains water-soluble components of the lavender plant — including trace linalool — and has a naturally gentle pH that makes it suitable as a face toner after cleansing. Unlike alcohol-based toners, hydrosol does not strip the skin. At Lavender Backyard Garden®, our lavender hydrosol is a genuine by-product of our on-farm distillation of Lavandula × intermedia 'Super' — not manufactured separately or imported. It can be used morning and evening after cleansing, before moisturiser.

How do I build a simple natural skincare routine?

A simple, effective natural skincare routine has three core steps: cleanse, tone, moisturise. Morning: cleanse with a gentle cleanser, apply lavender hydrosol toner, follow with a lightweight moisturiser and SPF. Evening: cleanse, tone, apply night cream or face mask (2–3 times per week). Weekly: use a gentle face scrub before toning to remove dead skin cells. For the body, apply a body oil to damp skin post-shower, then a body lotion to any areas of persistent dryness. All products should be patch-tested before first use, especially for sensitive skin.

Are Lavender Backyard Garden® skincare products suitable for sensitive skin?

Our skincare products are formulated without synthetic fragrance, artificial colourants, or parabens — ingredients commonly associated with skin sensitivity reactions. All scent comes from our farm-distilled lavender essential oil or lavender hydrosol. However, lavender essential oil is a botanical extract and some individuals may be sensitive to it, as with any plant-based ingredient. We recommend patch-testing any new product on the inner forearm for 24 hours before full use. If you have a known skin sensitivity or diagnosed skin condition, please consult your healthcare provider before use.

What makes your skincare different from other natural skincare brands in NZ?

Most natural skincare brands source their lavender oil from overseas — France, Bulgaria, or Australia — and blend it locally. At Lavender Backyard Garden®, we grow two lavender varieties on our Newstead farm in Waikato — Lavandula × intermedia 'Super' and Lavandula angustifolia 'Pacific Blue' — harvest them in late January and February, and steam-distil the essential oil on-site. Every product using lavender oil contains oil from our own crop, not imported oil. Our formulator Tracey is a certified personal care and cosmetic specialist based on-farm. That is the difference: traceable from field to finished product, in the same place, by the same team, every season.

Is Manuka Honey in skincare really effective?

Manuka honey is a New Zealand-native ingredient with documented humectant and skin-conditioning properties. Research has identified methylglyoxal (MGO) as an active compound in manuka honey — though the concentrations used in cosmetic formulations are distinct from therapeutic concentrations studied medically. In skincare, manuka honey functions primarily as a humectant — drawing and retaining moisture in the skin — and as a gentle emollient that supports the skin's surface texture. Our skincare products are not medicines and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any skin condition or medical condition.
