Natural Air Freshener Guide: Sachets, Sprays & Diffusers

Everything we grow, dry and distil to freshen a home naturally, from our Waikato lavender farm to your wardrobe, living room and car.

This guide was written by the team at Lavender Backyard Garden®, a small-batch lavender farm in Newstead, Waikato, New Zealand, run by Ben and Samantha since 2014.

Every sachet, spray and diffuser in this guide starts in our own spray-free fields of Lavandula × intermedia 'Super'. We harvest it when the flower buds are full of essential oil, air-dry it on the farm for our sachets, and steam-distil the rest on-site for our sprays and diffusers. No imported lavender oil, and no synthetic fragrance.

The tips here come from what we see on the farm and what our customers tell us in their reviews, not from generic home fragrance sources.

Lavender Sachets: The Simplest Natural Air Freshener

A lavender sachet is a small fabric bag of dried lavender buds that releases its scent slowly as the essential oil inside the buds evaporates. It needs no flame, plug or refill, which makes it the easiest natural air freshener for drawers, wardrobes, linen cupboards and suitcases.

The secret is in the harvest. We cut our 'Super' lavender in early February, when the buds are at their fullest with essential oil, then air-dry the bunches on our Waikato farm so the oil stays sealed inside each bud. That is why one of our sachets keeps its scent for more than three months.

When the scent starts to fade, give the sachet a gentle squeeze. Pressing the buds releases more of the oil held inside them, and the lavender scent comes straight back.

Our customers most often tuck sachets in with woollen jerseys, a yarn stash or the linen cupboard. One reviewer, Joan, told us it is “very refreshing to smell when you open your drawers”.

Room and Linen Sprays: Instant Freshness

A natural room spray is a water-based mist scented with essential oil instead of synthetic fragrance. Every Lavender Backyard Garden® spray uses lavender essential oil steam-distilled on our own farm, blended in small batches with companion essential oils or plant resins.

Room sprays are made for the air: a few sprays freshen a lounge, bathroom or home office in seconds. Linen sprays are made for fabric: mist sheets, pillows, curtains and towels lightly from about 30cm away and let them dry, and the scent stays in the fibres for longer than it lasts in the air.

A little goes a long way. One customer uses our Mint & Lavender Room Spray at the office and only needs “a small spray”, while another mists her bedspread with Sweet Amber & Lavender because “it makes the room smell lovely”.

Reed Diffusers, Aroma Stones and Wax Melts: Steady, Flame-Free Scent

A reed diffuser is a glass vessel of essential oil in a diffuser base, with porous reeds that draw the oil upward and release scent continuously into the room. Our reed diffuser uses a dedicated diffuser base rather than water, because oil and water do not mix, and it is scented only with our own lavender essential oil. Flip the reeds when you would like the scent a little stronger, and top up the same jar with our amber bottle refill.

Aroma stones are small plaster ornaments that soak up a few drops of essential oil and let it drift out slowly, with no heat or plug. Our caged bird stone arrives with a few drops of our lavender oil, and for any of our stones you simply add 3 to 4 drops of lavender essential oil whenever the scent fades. One customer keeps her owl on the bathroom vanity, and another uses the caged bird in his car.

Soy wax melts give a soft lavender scent from a wax warmer, with no flame to watch. Each pack holds six snap-off cubes scented only with our lavender essential oil.

Lavender essential oil is rich in linalool, a naturally occurring compound that has been studied for its calming effect, which is one reason a lavender-scented room can feel restful as well as fresh.

Car Air Fresheners: Natural Scent for the Commute

A natural car air freshener scents the inside of a car with essential oil or dried plants instead of the synthetic fragrance used in most hanging card fresheners. Our lavender car diffuser is a slim oak wood or space-grey aluminium vent clip that holds a fibre stick soaked in our own steam-distilled lavender essential oil. Air from the vent passes over the stick and carries the scent through the car, with no heat, plug or batteries.

Each stick is strongest for the first few days and softens over about 2 to 4 weeks, then you slide in a fresh refill. One customer, Mary, noticed exactly that: a strong, lovely scent at first that had worn off after a few weeks. That is the stick running its course, and refills are sold singly or in packs of five. In a hot car in a New Zealand summer the oil evaporates faster, so sticks may need replacing sooner from December to February.

For a car without vent clips, hang our pastel felt ball keyring diffuser from the mirror or your keys and add a few drops of essential oil, or tuck a eucalyptus, rosemary and lavender sachet into the door pocket. One customer uses our caged bird aroma stone in his car with a few drops of lavender oil.

Natural Air Fresheners

Frequently Asked Questions About Natural Air Fresheners

What is a natural air freshener?

A natural air freshener scents the air with plant material or essential oils rather than synthetic fragrance. Common types are dried lavender sachets, water-based essential oil room sprays, reed diffusers, aroma stones and soy wax melts. At Lavender Backyard Garden®, every air freshener is made from Lavandula × intermedia 'Super' grown spray-free and steam-distilled on our farm in Newstead, Waikato, New Zealand.

How long does a lavender sachet stay fragrant?

Our lavender sachets stay fragrant for more than three months. Because the buds are air-dried, the essential oil stays inside them and is released slowly. The scent fades faster in open air, so when it softens, give the sachet a gentle squeeze and the scent comes back. Keeping sachets in a closed drawer or wardrobe helps them last longer.

Why does dried lavender keep its scent for so long?

Lavender's scent comes from essential oil, rich in linalool and linalyl acetate, stored in tiny glands in each flower bud. We harvest our 'Super' lavender in early February in the Waikato, when the buds hold the most oil, then air-dry the bunches on the farm instead of using heat. Gentle air-drying keeps the oil sealed inside the buds, so it is released slowly over many months.

What is the difference between a room spray and a linen spray?

A room spray is designed to freshen the air quickly, so a few sprays scent a lounge, bathroom or office in seconds. A linen spray is designed for fabric: you mist sheets, pillows, curtains or towels lightly from about 30cm away and let them dry, and the scent stays in the fibres. All our sprays are water-based, scented with essential oils and plant resins, and never synthetic fragrance, so many customers use them both ways.

Is a reed diffuser or a room spray better for my home?

It depends on the room. A reed diffuser gives a steady, continuous scent with no effort, which suits hallways, bathrooms and entrances. A room spray gives an instant burst when you need it, such as before guests arrive or after cooking. Many homes use both: a diffuser for a constant background scent and a spray for quick refreshes.

Are lavender air fresheners safe around children and pets?

Our lavender sachets contain only dried lavender, our herb sachet adds dried eucalyptus and rosemary, and our sprays and diffusers are scented with essential oils, never synthetic fragrance. Even so, essential oils are concentrated, so keep bottles, diffusers and aroma stones out of reach of children and pets, and do not spray directly onto skin or animals. Cats can be especially sensitive to essential oils, so use diffusers in well-ventilated rooms and ask your vet if you have concerns.

Is the lavender in your air fresheners grown in New Zealand?

Yes. Every Lavender Backyard Garden® air freshener uses Lavandula × intermedia 'Super' grown spray-free on our farm in Newstead, near Hamilton in the Waikato. We air-dry the buds for our sachets and steam-distil the essential oil on-site for our sprays, reed diffuser, aroma stones and wax melts. We do not use imported lavender oil.

What is the best natural way to freshen a musty wardrobe in a damp New Zealand winter?

In a damp New Zealand winter, wardrobes and linen cupboards can start to smell stale. Air them out on dry, sunny days, make sure clothes are fully dry before you put them away, and leave a little space between items. Then tuck lavender sachets into drawers, hang one in the wardrobe for a gentle, lasting scent, and mist a linen spray over stored bedding when you take it out. A sachet will not fix a damp problem on its own, so deal with any moisture first.

What is the best natural car air freshener in New Zealand?

A vent clip diffuser with real essential oil is the easiest natural option, because the air from the vent carries the scent through the car. Our lavender car diffuser holds a fibre stick soaked in lavender essential oil steam-distilled on our Waikato farm, with no heat, plug or batteries. For cars without vent clips, a felt ball keyring diffuser, an aroma stone or a eucalyptus, rosemary and lavender sachet works well too. See all options in our car air freshener collection.

How long does a lavender car diffuser refill stick last?

Each refill stick is strongest for the first few days and softens over about 2 to 4 weeks, depending on how often the vent is on. In a hot car during a New Zealand summer the oil evaporates faster, so you may need a fresh stick sooner. Refill sticks are sold singly or in packs of five, and the oak or aluminium clip is reused.

Do you deliver natural air fresheners across New Zealand?

Yes. We make our air fresheners on our farm in the Waikato and send them by tracked courier across New Zealand. Delivery is free on orders of $85 and over. Orders usually arrive in 3 to 5 working days in the North Island and 5 to 7 working days in the South Island and rural areas.
